Mint Apartments

Port Melbourne, Victoria

The restricted and prominent site of 71 Rouse Street offered the opportunity to generate a design that echoed the historically significant context. Mint Apartments celebrate the sites maritime location, with varying façade treatment reflecting the proximate bay. Light animates the rhythmic composition of concrete faceted southern and western facades whilst conversely north and west facades are primarily glazed, capturing and reflecting light, producing a rippled effect that emulates the play of light on water.

Mint’s plans vary across levels, creating a dynamic western façade as balconies shift creating a cadence between solid and void whilst enhancing living area views beyond. Internally apartments vary between a robust dark scheme and a light-hued restrained palette, allowing users to participate through interior customisation. Ground floor façade treatment takes stimulus from native vegetation prevalent within the foreshore area, creating a ‘virtual landscape’ that continues this motif of fluidity whilst activating building interface at grade.
